The San Juan Mountain Range is the largest group of mountains in Colorado producing a divine landscape of alpine peaks and extensive alpine basins. Surrounding Ouray, the San Juan 's jagged topography creates amble opportunity for various mountain activities. Throughout the summer months there is endless opportunity for backpacking, mountaineering, rock climbing, and hiking. Ouray has over 65 hiking trails in the immediate area maintained by the Forest Service. The cool winter months create the perfect environment for ice climbing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Contact a local guide to find the right adventure for your experience level. Hiking maps are sold at local businesses and the Visitor's Center.
